Indeed, at first glance we might believe that Jesus is asking us to be perfect with impeccable conduct, without committing any sin and this, through our own resources. On the contrary !! This verse explains the principle of holiness. Here, the Lord encourages us to humbly recognize our weakness which is original sin in order to ask and let God restore his perfection to our hearts. The diffusion of Grace is possible when we sincerely choose to let God perfect us. The more we maintain this ardent desire for Christ to come and shape us, the more temptations we encounter. However, they are what allow us to choose it again and again. It is a journey where the priority is the search for closeness with God by recognizing our poverty rather than trying to achieve “perfection” with our own strength to feel more worthy of following him.
Thus, to be perfect according to the Bible is to be humble: to live in truth with God, with oneself and with one's neighbor.
Be in truth: the Lord needs your authenticity to add his perfection to it.
