Supporting Eastern Christians: a humanitarian emergency

Today, it is important to me to speak to you about the current condition of life of Eastern Christians. As you may have noticed, the 2024 collection includes 4 t-shirts, including one specially dedicated to supporting Eastern Christians, the “Strength” t-shirt.

But why should we support Eastern Christians?

Eastern Christians endure extremely difficult living conditions, often due to Islamist oppression. They are subjected to percussion. For example, violent attacks on churches, kidnapping of members of the Christian community for exorbitant ransoms, systematic discrimination in access to education and employment, as well as discriminatory laws limiting their religious freedom , are commonplace. These Christians live in constant fear of being targeted for their faith and are often forced to flee their homes to escape persecution. This cruel reality highlights the intolerable injustice and oppression faced by Eastern Christians, revealing the need to support their cause and defend their fundamental rights. For this, associations have been created to fight against this injustice. This is the case of the Œuvre d’Orient, an association founded in 1856.

Why did you choose the “L’Œuvre d’Orient” association?

L'Œuvre d'Orient is a French, non-profit association recognized as being of general interest. Committed to serving Eastern Christians, it operates in 23 countries, mainly in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe and India.

It gives bishops, priests and religious communities, as well as volunteers, the means to accomplish their missions. The association provides emergency assistance, such as shelter, food and medical care, to Christians and other vulnerable populations facing humanitarian crises. It invests in building and renovating schools, ensuring Christian children have access to quality education despite the challenges they face. L'Œuvre d'Orient strives to protect Christian historical and religious sites, as well as cultural and artistic treasures, against destruction, vandalism and looting. It provides spiritual and pastoral support to local Christian communities, training priests and religious and encouraging religious practice despite external pressures. Thus, the association advocates for the rights of Eastern Christians on the international stage and raises awareness of the challenges they face, thus contributing to their recognition and protection. By acting at these levels, the Work of the Orient plays an essential role in preserving the lives and dignity of Eastern Christians, helping them to resist oppression, maintain their identity and build a better future for their communities.
